Are Ravers less ageist than other youth movements?

John Law To me, being an old fart, the underground rave culture seems to be a really vibrant thing and they've certainly taken to the Burning Man event. We had five systems out there this year, and they're very welcome. Its a very important part of what we're doing - I think. You may find different opinions about that amongst the Burning Man organisers. There are some old rock and roll farts who say "Turn it down!" but see, to me that's like my dad not liking Elvis Presley.

Pranksters

Do you see what you're doing as following in the footsteps of pranksters from other times?

John Law Personally I'm a fan of some of the Situationists stuff that came out of France and the Surrealists and Dadaists. Alfred Jarry is a big hero of mine, and they were all effectively doing pranks, and many of them have been termed artists in retrospect. Whether they would accept that cage, I don't know, and they're dead now so you can't ask. I'm a prankster myself, I've been called an artist but I don't really accept that box. The stuff you're talking about doesn't usually get into art galleries. Art galleries are big commercial clearing houses, basically, and I'm not terribly interested in them and I don't think most of the people I work with are either.
