"I've had 'the out of body
experiences'. I've also had intuitive types of experiences. All
scientists use their intuition yet they don't know how to explain
what intuition is."
Edgar Mitchell
In
February 1971 after the near disaster of Apollo 13, NASA launched
Apollo 14 on a moon mission. It was to be a 3rd moon landing.
The journey took three days and there was so little talking that
Mission Control nicknamed them the 'silent crew'. On the moon,
the crew set off on a walk to Cone crater and were only 200 ft
from their target when the mission commander Alan Shepherd decided
they should turn back. Edgar Mitchell argued for continuing "I
think you're all finks", he said. At the end of their three
hour moon walk, Shepherd surprised everyone by producing a golf
ball and a six iron and attempting a little 'sand trap shot'.
On arrival back on earth, there was only muted interest in the
mission, the press were most interested in Alan Shepherd's golfing
exploits. But during the lunar mission Ed Mitchell had been quietly
engaged in a private experiment which to many would seem a little
more significant. He had arranged to do some tests on telepathy
with a group of people back on earth. This was truly, historicaly
the first successful demonstration of PSI in space...
Space Pioneer
Ed Mitchell I've had an interest in the problems of this
universe between science and mysticism, religion, call it what
you will, from childhood. I was raised in a fundamentalist tradition
and very attracted to the techniques of science, so obviously
I kind of put that on a back-burner as an avocational interest
through most of my early career and the Korean War and being a
military officer and all of that. But I oriented my career towards
the space programme in 1957. When Sputnik went up I knew humans
would be right behind, so I said "That's where I'm going."
I was 27 and it took me nine years but I was selected after getting
a PhD and more test pilot credentials and flight experience and
so forth.
As I approached my flight assignments after being selected as
an astronaut I started concerning myself about the larger questions.
I was asking myself "Why are we going into space? What is
our destiny in space? What is space? What is the Universe? Where
do we fit in it?"
What is your opinion of the current space
programme?
Ed Mitchell It needs revitalising, the interest of the
public has been lost in the fact that we have very serious global
problems. The priorities have to be re-adjusted to meet the immediate
need. Now the space programme in near-Earth orbit can be terribly
helpful in solving our ecological problems because of the surveillance
capabilities and the monitoring capabilities available from space.
And furthermore once the space-view is accepted, you know, photographs
of Earth from space have done more to raise the level of awareness
in the world than anything since the Christian Bible.
