Psychedelics
How involved were you in the psychedelic
end of research?
Ed Mitchell I haven't been involved in it for twenty years.
Having once been there you never forget,
presumably?
Ed Mitchell And you very quickly realise that it is a false
start, because you have all the capability of doing the same thing
without it and with less debilitating side-effects.
What would you recommend?
Ed Mitchell Meditation does exactly the same thing.
God
Is there any particular spiritual tradition
which has helped you in formulating your own beliefs?
Ed Mitchell Well, all of them. I characterise in my books
the four traditions - the Chinese tradition which came out of
Taoism, the Buddhist tradition, the Zoroastrian tradition that
came out of Persia and the pre - Socratic scholars. Those pre
- Socratic scholars all looked at the nature of the internal experience.
I described that time of the four civilisations as the parable
of the four blind men examining the elephant. One with the tail,
one with the leg, the trunk and the ear, they all came up with
part of the picture but not the whole picture. It takes all of
them to get the whole picture. Unfortunately Western, Judaic-Christian
tradition has followed the Aristotelian line of thought and ignored
the Platonic line of thought and it takes both of them to get
the whole picture.
So we're in a unique position now to have
access to all these perspectives at once?
Ed Mitchell That's exactly what we need, the integration
and coherence of knowledge, not emphasising one aspect or the
other but integrating the whole.
