Drugs
Peter Russell I don't think there's any point at all to
tell people not to take drugs, in our society, drugs are freely
available to anyone who wants to take them. In a way they always
have been in all societies. I think its about exploring drugs
carefully, sensibly, knowing what you're taking. The thing that
everybody has always said is that set and setting is very important.
Certain drugs that you take and go partying, that to me is drug
abuse, but if someone is taking them in a situation where it's
for their own inner growth, perhaps taking it in some sort of
spiritual setting... in fact drugs is the wrong word, its more
chemical sacrements which have played a part in all cultures,
they have a role to play in our culture.
At the moment we just lump everything together as 'Drugs are bad'.
But if you look at some of the great creative people in our society,
they're people who've often played around with substances. Coleridge,
and people like that are classic examples. Pythagoras explored
a lot of psychedelics. Our society doesn't like us to know this
about some of our heroes.
The Seven and a Half Cycle
Peter Russell An idea that I looked at a number of years
ago was that there's a resonant frequency which is due to the
actual size of the Earth. If you send off a radio wave around
the planet, in one second, at the speed of light, the radio wave
would have gone seven and a half times round the Earth. So a frequency
is set up, around the Earth. And you get this with thunderstorms,
because they send out huge electrical impulses and these vibrations
in the ionosphere, at 7.5 cycles a second, are being set up. Now
its interesting that in deep meditation, the brain waves seem
to slow down to around this frequency, maybe its just coincidence,
but I wonder whether, in some way, we may be tuning in to some
sort of deep, essential vibration of the Earth's magnetic field.
I'm not saying that we're necessarily picking up any information,
its just a resonance thing - in the same way as women tend to
menstruate with the moon, that cycle of the moon and our bodies
adjust to it. Perhaps our brains, electromagnetically, are adjusting
to that 7.5 cycle frequency of the Earth.
The Voice of God
Peter Russell The trouble with any ideas, any insights,
whether they occur in meditation, in a trance state, in drug states,
is knowing where they came from. I think that's where we have
to be careful. You can look at the idea and say "Is this
insight valuable?" Whether that's come from some extraterrestial
being or from your unconscious it doesn't matter and the danger
is if you start getting too caught up in where its come from,
you're getting into all the flakiness and all the belief stuff.
For me it's, yes, take insights, they're valuable and test them
in the light of day, some of the insights I think are in fact
coming from our own garbage, just internal crap that's coming
up in meditation or whatever. Look at it, does this make sense?
If it does, put it into practise. Don't worry about where it's
coming from. One of my favourite sayings is "Just because
it's the voice of God doesn't mean it's right." Discrimination
is very important these days.
TM and the Crime Rate
Peter Russell The TM organisation are the people who've
done the most work on that. They've put five hundred people into
a city, at times, meditating almost all day long, for several
weeks, and have noticed quite remarkable effects in terms of decreasing
crime rates, decreasing hospital admissions, decreasing car accidents.
To begin with, nobody would take these results seriously because
it didn't fit, but they repeated them time and time again and
I've looked at the evidence, and other people have looked at the
evidence. Either they're totally cheating, and I don't think they
are and other people don't believe they are, and people have tested
their results. I don't think it's a fake. So there seems to be
something there which people cannot explain, and it seems to be
standing up statistically.
It goes totally against our paradigm. This stuff doesn't happen,
it can't happen, but it does seem to be standing up.
It could be a cheap way of emptying the
jails?
Peter Russell Well, this may be one of the most powerful
agents for change, people changing their minds, individually and
en masse!
